State of Washington secondary Archives: on Education

Bill Bryant: Fully fund education; give principals & teachers flexibility

Every kid should have an equal chance to get ahead. Unfortunately, our traditional school system is failing too many kids. That is morally wrong, and it undercuts our economy. Let's embrace innovations that meet the needs of a diverse population in the 21st Century.

Right now, we're failing too many of Washington's children. Depending on where you live, nearly 25% of our 9th graders won't graduate from high school, a percentage that is even higher in some disadvantaged or lower property value neighborhoods. I am running to make fully funding education our state's first and top priority. I will reinvent the last two years of high school so that every kid graduates with the skills they need to get a family wage job. I want to give principals and teachers the funding and flexibility they need to meet the diverse needs of 21st century students.

Pramila Jayapal: Additional $158 million for early childhood education

Pramila knows that early education provides a strong start that can have a long lasting and far reaching positive impact in the lives of our children and our community. She was named a Children's Alliance Champion in the State Senate for her efforts to pass the Early Start Act that put an additional $158 million into early childhood education and she'll continue to be a strong advocate for early childhood education in Congress.

America's public schools teachers have one of the greatest responsibilities in our nation. That's why Pramila will fight for increased teacher pay and benefits, so we can attract and retain the very best. And she'll work to get rid of unnecessary testing that burden teachers so that they can get back to preparing our children with the skills they need to compete in the 21st-century economy.

Pramila Jayapal: Two years of guaranteed tuition at community colleges

In the State Senate Pramila served on the Equity and Opportunity Gap Oversight and Accountability Committee, where she led critical conversations about equity in all education policies. She pushed for reforms that take into account the individual student rather than just aggregate data points. She also helped create a model policy for language translation and interpretation for Limited English Proficient parents and fought for additional support for teachers of bilingual and special needs kids.

Pramila understands the importance of higher education to our economy and believes all hardworking students deserve the opportunity to receive the education they need to succeed. In the State Senate, she introduced the Washington Promise program, which would provide two years of guaranteed tuition at community and technical colleges for all eligible Washington residents.

Tiffany Smiley: Empower families to choose best education for their children

Despite the best efforts of so many of our teachers, the past year of distance and remote learning has shown all of us the holes in our education system. We need to empower Washington families to choose the education that is best for their children. My boys, like your children and grandchildren, have unique talents and face individual challenges, and our education system must work to meet their needs so they can succeed in their futures.
