We'll need to think creatively about ways to offer services and find ways to prioritize care for our elders in our budget. We need to expand our investment in services that can help South Dakotans stay in their homes longer, including better
reimbursement for providers of home care services and community-based elder care options. We need to ensure our existing elder care infrastructure is preserved through adequate reimbursement for nursing homes and assisted living providers.

Eliminate taxable maximum of $118,500
Social Security is a program designed to make sure that, after paying their fair share, individuals can retire with dignity. Right now, if you make more than $118,500 each year, any additional income is not taxed for Social Security.
In order to ensure that Social Security is sustainable for future generations, we should eliminate this taxable maximum of $118,500, and have those who are the most able to contribute, pay their fair share.

Don't "sunset" Social Security; make it better
Most Republicans don't agree with Sen. Rick Scott's plan to sunset programs including Medicare and Social Security, Sen. Mike Rounds said on CNN's "State of the Union." He thinks of those vast programs similarly to defense spending, which Congress needs
to pass every year."We're never going to not fund defense. But at the same time we--every single year, we look at how we make it better," Rounds said. "And I think it's about time we start talking about Social Security and making it better."

Keeping these programs strong is a moral obligation
Social Security and Medicare are a promise that after a lifetime of hard work, regular people will not be left struggling in old age or when facing serious illness. Keeping these programs strong is a moral obligation and practical necessity
for economic stability and the dignity of the millions counting on them. Career politicians have proposed privatizing Medicare and Social Security so Big Money can further profit off the backs of senior citizens.
