Allan Fung: Will make infrastructure a top priority in his final term

Fung said infrastructure repair will be one of his major priorities during his final term. "We're going to do a lot more to address our school buildings, we're going to be able to do a lot more with our roads," said Fung. "We just had passed a $20-million road bond, that's going to hopefully allow us to double the amount of roads that we're able to do annually."

Donald Carcieri: The new I-Way connects life-science academics with research

The new I-Way has not only already dramatically improved the traffic flow between I-95 and I-195, but the demolition of the old highway will unlock over 20 acres of prime land. The opening of this site will accelerate the development of a new life-sciences economy in R.I. It will link together and harness the research capacity of our higher education institutions, with the complementary research and clinical capacity at our major medical centers.

Gina Raimondo: RhodeWorks: fix highways ad 12n0 bridges

We passed the most comprehensive infrastructure program in recent history. It's no secret, that our roads and bridges are some of the worst in the country. But now, because of RhodeWorks, we're fixing our highways. By the end of this year, we'll have started or completed repairs on nearly 120 bridges: a visible sign that we are rebuilding Rhode Island together. And in the process, we're putting thousands of Rhode Islanders to work in good jobs that don't require a college degree.

Gina Raimondo: Fixed roads and bridges; now let's do public transportation

In the last four years, we've fixed more than 100 roads and bridges, and right now, we're fixing another 100. Now, just imagine what Rhode Island would look like if we improved our trains, buses, and public transit the same way we've tackled fixing our roads and bridges. Imagine a day when high speed commuter rail connects Providence to Boston; when electric buses powered by solar panels zip through dedicated bus lanes. That's within our grasp right now.

Lincoln Chafee: Sales & use tax on online sellers with no physical presence

I also see an opportunity in the near future to change the tax climate in Rhode Island. I and the Congressional Delegation have lobbied in recent years for passage of the federal Marketplace Fairness Act. This would level the playing field between bricks-and-mortar and online retailers by allowing each state t o collect sales and use taxes from sellers with no physical presence in the state. After a series of encouraging signs, including 69-27 passage by the US Senate, I now urge the House to take action on this important legislation. While current Rhode Island law dictates that should Marketplace Fairness Act pass, the state sales tax would be reduced from 7.0% to 6.5%, I believe that there are more effective ways to use the resulting revenues to increase our relative competitiveness. My proposed budget calls for reducing the corporate tax rate to 6.0% consistent with my goals in previous budgets. I also propose to eliminate the sales tax on electricity and gas for all businesses.
