Steve Garvey in 2024 CA Senate race
On Gun Control:
Supports very stringent background checks on gun sales
On his website, Garvey says he will serve with "commonsense compassion" and "work to build consensus" if elected. In a KQED interview on Oct. 10,
Garvey said he supported "very stringent background checks" when it comes to guns, implied that he opposes a national abortion ban, and voiced support for continuing aid to Ukraine.

On Abortion:
No nationwide ban; uphold the voice of the people
On abortion, Garvey said he does not support a nationwide abortion ban. "The people of California have spoken on abortion, and as their representative, I pledge to always uphold the voice of the people," he said. When asked if he supported abortion
rights, he added, "The people have spoken, and I will pledge to uphold that."Context from Associated Press 11/9/2022: Voters in California resoundingly approved a ballot measure to enshrine the right to abortion and contraception in the
state constitution. Partial returns showed California's Proposition 1 leading with 68% of the vote. The amendment in California declares that the state "shall not deny or interfere with an individual's reproductive freedom in their most intimate
decisions, which includes their fundamental right to choose to have an abortion and their fundamental right to choose or refuse contraceptives."

On Crime:
The best way to deter crime is to enforce our laws
We need to return to common-sense policies that hold criminals accountable, protect our victims, and places the safety of our families before politics. Our police departments need to be funded, our communities need to be engaged, and we must
do all we can to make sure our neighborhoods and schools are safe. Make no mistake, the best way to deter crime is to enforce our laws, and I will lead the charge to make sure our laws are followed.

On Crime:
Ensure that those locked up are not immediately freed
Praising the Golden State's "hardworking police and sheriffs" who are "committed to serving the people and providing peace," Garvey said there must be more done to ensure that those who are getting locked up are not immediately freed. "They're putting
their lives on the line, taking these criminals to the jails and getting them registered and doing the paperwork and looking out the window and seeing them walk through the parking lot because the DAs have let them go," Garvey said.

On Education:
Provide parents with more choices; reward great teachers
We must empower parents and teachers who know what's best for their children and students. We need to put the interest of all students first. We must give them a first-class education and teach them how to succeed. We must provide parents with more
choices, reward great teachers, and bring back important trade skills to our education system. We must work together to make sure our schools are the best they can possibly be.

On Energy & Oil:
State ban on sale of gas-powered cars by 2035 not realistic
He struck a series of familiar Republican positions, including calling for temporarily closing the border with Mexico, at a time when polls indicate widespread frustration with
President Joe Biden's handling of immigration. He was critical of the state's push to ban the sale of most new gas-powered cars by 2035, saying "that's not realistic."

On Foreign Policy:
Important to work close with our allies against threats
It's important that we work close with our allies and be prepared for the threats of tomorrow while actively positioning ourselves to counter the expansion of hostile foreign powers. More than anything, in order for us to be strong abroad,
we must be strong at home. We need leaders in Washington who will make level-headed decisions in the face of a rapidly changing and dangerous world.

On Government Reform:
Get government out of the way of small businesses
Innovation and entrepreneurship are at the heart of who we are as Californians. But for too many, the California dream has faded, as high taxes and red tape have made it impossible to start a small business and create jobs in our state.
It's time for a new approach that embraces small businesses and job creation, gets government out of the way, and taps into the spirit of hard-working small business owners and job creators across California.

On Homeland Security:
Modernize our military; achieve peace through strength
A strong United States means a safer world. With emerging threats around the globe, it's more important than ever for the United States to renew our commitment to our alliances and our role in global leadership.
We must invest in modernizing our military and achieve peace through strength.
It's important that we work close with our allies and be prepared for the threats of tomorrow while actively positioning ourselves to counter the expansion of hostile foreign powers.
More than anything, in order for us to be strong abroad, we must be strong at home. We need leaders in Washington who will make level-headed decisions in the face of a rapidly changing and dangerous world.

On Immigration:
Wants to complete the wall at the U.S.-Mexico border
Garvey joined U.S. Rep. Darrell Issa, a San Diego Republican, on a border tour hosted by the National Border Patrol Council, a union representing roughly 18,000 border patrol agents, a Garvey spokesperson told CalMatters.
Garvey met with volunteers providing migrant aid and encountered a group of migrants who had just crossed into California. Garvey also said he wanted to complete the wall at the U.S.-Mexico border, the reporter said.

Garvey played as a first baseman for the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres from 1969 to 1987, was a 10-time All-Star, National League Most Valuable Player in 1974, and National League Championship Series MVP in 1978 and 1984. Garvey also
holds the National League record for consecutive games played (1,207) and was named baseball's "Iron Man" by Sports Illustrated. Garvey was part of the Dodgers' infield that won four National League pennants and one World Series championship in 1981.

On Principles & Values:
Politicians need to take a more civil approach to politics
Today's politicians need to take a more civil approach to politics, restore their sense of duty to our country, and respect the institution. And, as vacancies on the Supreme Court arise, the best solution is to ensure the president appoints and the
Senate confirms justices only of the highest moral integrity. Rigorous interviews and background checks must be conducted, not hastily selecting a candidate that will accomplish a short-term partisan goal.

On Social Security:
Let's cut back on these entitlements; stop printing money
The recent rise in inflation is top of mind for Garvey, who gave some insight into how he would address some economic issues:"I go to the gas station at 7:30 a.m. and there will be all the trucks there of the hardworking men and women.
They’re not buying 10 gallons worth of gas anymore. They’re buying $10 worth of gas. Food is up 30 to 40 percent. So, at the end of the month, you’re down $800-900, and you worked as hard as you possibly could."
"What we need to do is stimulate the economy, free market capitalism. Let's cut back on these entitlements. Let's stop printing money.
Let's put money back into the country, into the men and women who have paid their taxes, who deserve to get the benefits of their hard-earned money."

On Tax Reform:
Career politicians increased taxes and fees, raised costs
For the first time in history, more people are leaving California because they can't afford to live in our great state. This is a direct result of our career politicians in Sacramento and Washington, D.C. continuously passing foolish laws and increasing
taxes and fees, resulting in higher costs for our basic needs, such as food, gas, and shelter. I will take a stand against out-of-control inflation and be a voice for the middle class and working families that are the backbone of our state.

On Budget & Economy:
Oppose new federal spending, stand up to tax increases
As a U.S. senator, reducing inflation would be my primary focus as it helps the affordability crisis facing so many hardworking families across California and the nation. A few ways to combat inflation are to oppose new federal spending, stand up
to higher tax increases and regulations that will drive up the cost of living on everyday goods and services, and streamline burdensome regulations that can stifle economic growth and increase production costs.
