Fox News Sunday interviews during 2020: on Free Trade

Ted Cruz: Chinese telecom companies are espionage operations

Cruz unveiled a bill to ban U.S. officials from using tech platforms supported by the Chinese government. Co-sponsored by Sen. Josh Hawley, the "Countering Chinese Attempts at Snooping" Act comes as lawmakers and the Trump administration seek to push back against Chinese espionage efforts. Cruz told Fox News that companies such as Tencent and Huawei "[a]re espionage operations for the Chinese Communist Party, masquerading as telecom companies for the 21st century."

Cruz's bill also takes aim at the United Nations, where there has been a surge in Chinese influence. The bill would offset U.S. payments to the U.N. equal to the amount paid by the world body to any of those Chinese companies. Foreign Policy Magazine reported that the United Nations had backed off a deal it had with Chinese Internet giant Tencent to help as a platform for thousands of online conversations to celebrate the United Nation's 75th anniversary.

Steve Bullock: Farmers want trade, they don't want aid

Q: How would you change what Trump is doing with the economy?

BULLOCK: How I would change what he's doing with this economy is really it's America first has become America alone. When a farmer says to me, every time the president tweets, we lose hundreds of thousands of dollars. Look, we need to be tough on China, especially when it comes to tech, but what he's doing is on the back of --

Q: Do you think he's not made those farmers whole with the payments?

BULLOCK: Absolutely not. The payments won't matter if, ultimately, we do lose market share. What farmers want is to make sure that they have a market. They want trade, they don't want aid.

Lindsey Graham: China has more to lose in trade war than US

Q: The North Koreans issued a statement yesterday saying that the meeting [with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo] was "regrettable," saying they were robber-like.

GRAHAM: I see China's hands all over this. We are in a fight with China. We buy $500 billion worth of goods from the Chinese. They buy $100 billion from us. They cheat and President Trump wants to change the economic relationship with China. So, if I were President Trump, I would not let China use North Korea to back me off of the trade dispute. We've got more bullets than they do when it comes to trade. We sell them $100 billion; they sell us $500 billion; we can hurt them more than they will hurt us. And all we're looking for is for them to stop cheating when it comes to trade. There's no doubt in my mind that it's the Chinese pulling a North Koreans back. And to our North Korean friends, can't say the word friend yet.
