Ron Johnson on War & Peace

No limit to Afghan presence; as long as it's terrorist haven

When it comes to the conflict in Afghanistan, Johnson said there should be no limit on the military's presence there so long as Afghanistan acts as a haven for terrorists.

"We better get ready to invade just about every country in the world then," Feingold said in response, arguing that Al-Qaeda is an international problem that cannot be solved with the invasion of just one country.

Supports Obama's withdrawal plan, since it was Bush's plan

Q: The President is drawing down in Iraq, leaving 50,000 troops in non-combat roles. Do you favor that withdrawal plan?

A: I believe that withdrawal plan was proposed by Pres. Bush, before Pres. Obama took office, and I hope it will work. I think the Iraqi defense forces are being stood up, and after that will provide the security it needs to establish a functioning democracy.

Q: You disagreed with Sen. Fiengold's votes against the wars in Iraq & Afghanistan?

A: I would never grandstand; I don't want to be an armchair general. For example, public pronouncements from Sen. Harry Reid before he surge had hardly begun, proclaiming the surge lost. That type of grandstanding undermines our efforts. The basic philosophy you need before you send any of our fine young men and women into harm's way in the battlefield is the commander-in-chief first needs to define what victory or success would be, and then be committed to that success. We've achieved that level of success in Iraq, but not in Afghanistan.

Iranian nuclear weapons: prevention instead of containment.

Johnson co-sponsored Resolution on Iran's nuclear program

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives, that Congress--
  1. Reaffirms that the US Government has a vital interest in working together to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapons capability;
  2. warns that time is limited to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapons capability;
  3. urges continued and increasing economic and diplomatic pressure on Iran until a full and sustained suspension of all uranium enrichment-related activities;
  4. expresses that the window for diplomacy is closing;
  5. expresses support for the universal rights and democratic aspirations of the people of Iran;
  6. strongly supports US policy to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapons capability;
  7. rejects any US policy that would rely on containment as an option in response to the Iranian nuclear threat.
