Vicki Slater on Gun Control

I know the value of our Second Amendment rights

Our Constitutional right to bear arms is a critical component of our country's history and our state's culture. Nothing should come between Mississippians and our right to responsible ownership and possession of guns.

Hunting and self-defense are just a couple of reasons why Mississippians deserve the right to responsible gun ownership. I know the value of our Second Amendment rights, and I will uphold those rights as Governor.

Educating Mississippians about gun safety is important to ensure guns are owned and used responsibly. Increasing education will help keep our children and our neighborhoods safe from dangerous gun misuse.

Strengthen law enforcement to reduce gun violence

For years, Mississippi has had one of the worst rates of gun violence in the nation. The Mississippi gun-murder rate has been second-worse in the nation since 2010--the rate of gun deaths in Mississippi is 92 percent higher than the national average. Mississippi also has the worst rate of gun murders of women in the entire country, and the fifth-worst gun-death rate of children. I will fight to strengthen laws that help law enforcement officers and prosecutors to reduce crime on our streets.
