Phil Bryant on Homeland Security

Tax credit for hiring unemployed veterans

Gov. Phil Bryant has signed a bill to provide tax relief to employers who hire unemployed veterans. House Bill 33, which takes effect Jan. 1, 2016, provides tax credits to employers who hire honorably discharged military veterans who have served on active duty on or after 9/11 and who have been unemployed for at least six months.

"We owe the men and women who defend our freedom a debt of gratitude," Gov. Bryant said. "Veterans make excellent employees and bring a unique skill set to the table. This bill will serve those who have served us by helping connect more of these men and women with job opportunities."

The bill provides a five-year tax credit of either 10 percent of the hired veteran's salary or $2,000, whichever is lesser. It applies to military veterans who have served on active duty on or after 9/11 and who have been unemployed for at least six months, including Guard and Reserve who have served on active duty during the current war.

Keep C-130J aircraft production in Mississippi; we need them

Strong coordination among state, federal and community partners is keeping the C-130J aircraft at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi. In past years, there had been a move to deactivate Keesler's 815th Tactical Airlift Squadron and relocate its ten C-130J aircraft, known as the "Flying Jennies", to another state. Gov. Bryant also joined with other Gulf Coast states in expressing to President Obama the importance of the C-I30 J aircraft to natural disaster response in hurricane-prone areas.

"This is outstanding news for Keesler, the Mississippi Gulf Coast and the entire state of Mississippi," Bryant said. "Mississippi's military facilities are vital to the state's economy, and they are integral to the communities in which they are located. We have been working for several years to prevent the unjustified relocation of these aircraft, and today we see the results of our teamwork."

Veterans treatment courts: 2nd chance for convicted vets

As a former deputy sheriff and as a state auditor, I have helped put many criminals behind bars and had no regrets about doing so when necessary. Our family has experienced a violent crime that resulted in the loss of a loved one. I have attended funerals and memorials of slain officers and witnessed firsthand the pain of those mothers and wives. I have no sympathy for violent or career criminals, and I believe that any modification to the correctional system should put the victim first.

I plan to ask for the creation of veterans treatment courts to aid our service men and women who have made mistakes and want to get back on track. I believe we owe our veterans this special attention because they, more than most, have earned a second chance from their country.
