Charlie Baker on Environment

Bottle bill is a money grab; don't expand it

Baker views bottle bill expansion as "mostly a money grab." The Swampscott Republican has been vocal about his support for a ballot question that seeks to decouple future increases in the gas tax from inflation, but on Wednesday he said he would oppose another ballot question to expand the state's bottle redemption law to include water and sports drinks. Citing his support for curbside recycling programs, Baker said, "I view the bottle bill expansion as mostly a money grab by the state and I think there are far better and less expensive ways for us to continue to recycle and to be effective." While Gov. Deval Patrick has repeatedly pushed in budget proposals to expand the bottle bill, House Democratic leaders have rejected the idea and the ballot question is being pushed by environmental advocates. Lobster fishing regulations are dangerous and burdensome

Coakley's campaign said today that the attorney general has gone beyond just commenting on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's new rules for the lobster fishing industry, which she views as burdensome on fishermen. A campaign spokeswoman said, "Martha has steadfastly fought on behalf of fishing communities across Massachusetts, suing the federal government over what she believes are unfair regulations against our fishing families. Her office has been actively engaged with the lobstermen on this issue and has already committed to help them work to reduce these burdensome regulations."

[Coakley's opponent Charlie] Baker said NOAA's plan to prohibit lobster fishing in the Cape Cod and Massachusetts bays from Jan. 1 to April 30 would "severely limit days on the water," and the ban on single lines and traps "could result in more dangerous conditions for fishermen. These new regulations are unacceptable," Baker said. (Cape Cod Times, 8/9/2014)

Protect & preserve natural resources for future generations

I believe that we have a responsibility to protect and preserve our natural resources for future generations and that Massachusetts can and must be a leader in promoting strong environmental policies. As Governor, I would continue the legacy of strong environmental leadership begun by Governor William Weld.
