Rae Vogeler on Crime

Moratorium on federal executions

Q: Do you support or oppose the Death Penalty?

A: Strongly Oppose. Declare a Moratorium on Federal Executions. US government studies show racial and geographic disparities in the use of the federal death penalty, yet the government continues to carry out executions.

"Three strikes" locks away otherwise productive people

Q: What do you think about mandatory Three Strikes sentencing laws?

A: Strongly Oppose. `Three strikes' statutes have been used to lock away hundreds of thousands of young people, poor people, African Americans and other people of color in prisons and prevent them from living productive lives. It has resulted in the United States locking up a greater proportion of its citizens than any other country in the world. It has overwhelmed our criminal justice system, wasting billions in tax-payer dollars.

'Tough on crime' policies bankrupt our state budgets

'Tough on crime' policies are bankrupting our state budgets and directing desperately needed funds away from education, jobs, health care and anti-poverty programs. Our emphasis needs to be on crime prevention and rehabilitation of offenders, not on incarceration.
