Alexi Giannoulias on Jobs

Losing job is more than just a paycheck; it affects morale

Q: What kind of midcourse correction should Obama make?

GIANNOULIAS: We should have had a laser-like focus on creating jobs. If people aren't working, they're not gonna be able to pay their mortgages. And we're gonna continue to have a housing market collapse. Losing a job is more than just losing a paycheck; it affects your morale; it affects our communities; and it makes us a less secure nation. So, we need to do everything we can to create private sector jobs and to stimulate the private sector.

Focus on investment in clean energy jobs

As we invest in jobs, we need to also focus on the jobs of tomorrow--good paying positions that can't be outsourced. Illinois is poised to lead as we move toward an economy that is based on technological innovation and clean energy production. Illinois i home to more than 2,500 companies that have created more than 28,000 "clean energy jobs", like building wind turbines, weatherizing homes, building a more efficient electricity grid that reaches every corner of Illinois, and producing energy from waste. Studies have shown that manufacturing jobs created by renewable energy--specifically wind and solar in the case of one study--have had an approximately 80% overlap in areas where jobs have been lost due to outsourcing. I believe that the road to America's energy independence runs right through the prairies and shuttered factories of Illinois. I will work to build on this foundation with the right kind of government incentives so that we can double this number in the next few years.

Evaluate workers on their abilities, not their identities

Workers should be evaluated on their ability to do a job, not on their identities. Alexi supports efforts, modeled after existing civil rights and disabilities legislation, to prohibit workplace discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.
