Alan Khazei on Crime

Strongly opposes the death penalty as ineffective & wrong

Alan strongly opposes the death penalty. It is ineffective, costly, and just plain wrong. Studies by criminologists in multiple states tell us that the death penalty does not deter crime. Instead, death penalty trials and executions cost millions of dollars more per case than life imprisonment. The death penalty is biased against minorities, and each year DNA testing exonerates wrongly accused individuals. Alan believes the death penalty has no place in a 21st Century America.

Opposes death penalty in all cases

In September, Capuano sought to highlight Coakley's evolution on the issue. Coakley previously favored the death penalty in two instances, including for those convicted of killing police officers, but about seven or eight years ago shifted her position because of concerns about wrongful convictions.

The other candidates in the Democratic race, City Year cofounder Alan Khazei and Boston Celtics co-owner Stephen G. Pagliuca, say they oppose the death penalty in all cases.
