Major investment in education related to people’s lives

We need a major investment in early education and early child care. I would get kids ready to learn by doubling the slots in Head Start. I would then propose adding 600,000 great new teachers to the public schools of this country over the next decade. You can look at education in terms of where people live their lives -- and that’s the way I look at it -- or you can look at it as if it’s some bureaucratic box that says “education” that’s unrelated to everything else we do in our lives.

60,000 new teachers; more community college aid

I view education as integrated into the lives of people. I propose a doubling of Head Start. We need to infuse our school systems with 60,000 new teachers a year, many of them aimed specifically at the categories that [are] low performance, in terms of math, science, computer education, and foreign language. Going beyond elementary and secondary education, I’ve proposed a program that would assist community colleges directly. They’re places where individuals upgrade their skills.

Prepare institutions for “lifetime education”

In the twenty-first century, we’re not just going to have to have education K through 12. We’re going to have to have lifetime education, and we’re going to have to have the institutions in place so that all Americans will be able to take advantage of that. We need to hold teachers and principals accountable. We have to have teacher training over a long term, We have to put good technology in our classrooms, and we have to have national standards.
