Sylvia Garcia on Environment

Garcia consistently defended clean air and water in Texas

Sen. Sylvia Garcia is a dedicated public servant, and has been nothing short of a champion in the defense of clean air and clean water across our great state. Know that Senator Garcia has earned a lifetime voting score of 96% on Environment Texas' legislative scorecard during her tenure in the Texas State Senate. She, too, was a leader this past session in the effort to raise awareness about, and push legislation to combat, the dangers of lead contaminated water in Texas schools.

Must be proactive to ensure safe drinking water for children

State Senator Sylvia Garcia said she was both surprised and disappointed after KHOU 11 Investigates found less than one third of Houston-area school district surveyed had records showing they tested drinking water for lead. "I think it's incumbent on us to be proactive and to make sure that we do all that we can to protect our children and make sure that they're safe at school and that they're drinking water that's safe to drink," said Garcia.

Keep administrative restrictions on water rights

In a news release, Sen. Van Taylor R-Plano said Senate Bill 225, which he filed in November, proposes the same type of reforms for contested cases involving water rights. In response to a request for an interview, Taylor's Chief of Staff sent a link to a news release on SB 225 and SB 226, also filed by Taylor. "These two bills seek to eliminate bureaucratic red tape that prevents Texas from accessing the water it needs to grow," according to the news release.

Legislative Summary: CSSB 226, Relating to the procedure for action on certain applications for an amendment to a water right.

Legislative Outcome: The motion prevailed by the following vote in Senate on 4/18/2017: Yeas 25, Nays 6. Sen. Garcia voted NAY. Bill then died in House.
