Sylvia Garcia on Abortion

A woman's choice should not be decided by politicians

NARAL Pro-Choice America today announced its endorsement of Veronica Escobar (TX-16) and Sylvia Garcia (TX-29) in their races for Congress. "I am proud to receive the endorsement of NARAL, a leading advocacy organization fighting to protect women's reproductive rights," Garcia said. "A woman's choice should be between her and her doctor, not a choice made by politicians. I have fought at the Texas Capitol for the reproductive healthcare needs of Texans, and will continue the fight in Washington."

Women capable of making own decision with doctor's advice

When I spoke with her earlier this year, Garcia told me that while her Roman Catholic faith shapes and focuses her politics, religious belief "can't be something we impose on others." "While not everyone agrees when a fetus becomes a person," Garcia explained, "we can all agree that a woman who is pregnant is a person. I believe that each woman is capable of making her own decision with her doctor's advice, her family's support and the faith in her heart."

Against abortion, but respects a woman's right to one

State Sen. Sylvia Garcia, D-Houston, said she does not support abortion, but respects the rights of other women to make their own decisions. Garcia has been on a bus tour this month across the state with other Democrats, including state Sen. Wendy Davis of Fort Worth, to rally against the restrictions. "We all have to follow our own conscience and we have to respect the rights of others to do that," Garcia said. "To me, that's what being Catholic is about; we don't judge, it's up to God to judge."

Pro-choice, according to PVS survey.

Garcia supports the PVS survey question on abortion rights

Project Vote Smart inferred whether candidates agree or disagree with the statement, 'Abortion: Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?' PVS self-description: "The Political Courage Test provides voters with positions on key issues. Historically, candidates have failed to complete our test due to the advice they receive from their advisors and out of fear of negative attack ads."
