Matt Brown on Principles & Values

Beat political insiders & took on establishment corruption

Matt has never been afraid to fight the most powerful political groups to do what he believed was right. When he ran for office in 2002, he challenged the political machine and beat them. Against enormous pressure from the political insiders, he ran a grassroots campaign across Rhode Island and defeated an incumbent Secretary of State who had the full backing of the political establishment.

Matt went on to win the general election and immediately went to work taking on the toughest problems facing Rhode Islanders. Matt took on the corruption at the State House head on. For years, powerful special interest groups had funneled money to elected officials to influence their votes. Matt fought these special interests, requiring all lobbyists to publicly disclose any money they give to elected officials. These reforms were not popular with the politicians and lobbyists. But Matt stood his ground-and put an end to the days when special interests could buy influence at the expense of the public.
