Tony Knowles on Abortion

2004 former Democratic Challenger for Senate (AK; previously served as Governor)

Support woman’s decision in cases of rape

The candidates were pressed on their stances on abortion and were even asked what they would do if their own daughters were raped and became pregnant.

Palin said she would support abortion only if the mother’s life was in danger. When it came to her daughter, she said, “I would choose life.”

Knowles, responding to the scenario involving his daughter, said he would counsel her and talk to her, but it would be her decision. “I would love her and support her no matter what decision she made,” he said

Abortion is “absolutely” a privacy issue

What about the social issues that Alaskans, especially the party faithful who often decide primary elections, may find important? Here’s what Tony Knowles has to say about abortion.

Knowles supports abortion rights and said abortion is “absolutely” a privacy issue. Government should not stand between a woman and her doctor, he said.

Pro-Choice and Pro-Family

Knowles is pro-choice and pro-family. He believes that the government has no place between a woman and her doctor. As Governor, Knowles fought to protect that right for women by vetoing anti-choice bills, and expanding women’s health services and education about reproductive choice. Knowles has been endorsed by Planned Parenthood and NARAL Pro-Choice America.

Supports stem cell research

I join the many other Americans and a majority of the U.S. Senate, who have called for the Administration to drop its opposition to stem cell research, which offers the promise to address many terrible afflictions. No words are more compelling than those of First Lady Nancy Reagan, who said ‘Science has presented us with a hope called stem cell research, which may provide our scientists with many answers that for so long have been beyond our grasp.I just don’t see how we can turn our backs on this’.

Right to choose & other freedoms are under attack

Tony Knowles participated in opening ceremonies Thursday at the new Planned Parenthood offices in Anchorage. Knowles marked the 31st anniversary of the historic Roe v. Wade decision and warned that American’s personal freedoms, including the right to choose, are under attack as they never have been before. “Many of our constitutional rights are being eroded and the number one target for those that want to take away our freedoms is a woman’s right to choose,” Knowles said. “The appointment of judges to the Supreme Court, where just one additional vote is all that stands between the status quo and the elimination of a woman’s right to choose is a critical part of this effort. ”There are few if any more important things to Alaskans than the health of our families and our right to make our own decisions,“ Knowles added. ”The fight for the most sacred personal freedom will be fought and won at the local level, in our communities and in our neighborhoods.“
