Tony Sanchez on Crime

Former Democratic Challenger TX Governor

Enforce death penalty, but ban it on mentally retarded

The Supreme Court struck down the state's ability to execute individuals determined to be mentally retarded. A bill designed to deal with this possibility, (HB236) would have banned execution of the mentally retarded, but the measure was vetoed by Rick Perry. I would not have vetoed the measure.

We must retain and enforce the death penalty, while also studying questions such as mental retardation to insure the ability of the state to deliver swift and measured justice to any and all offenders.

Spend money on education rather than prisons

Sanchez says, "Instead of spending money to incarcerate people because they are not educated properly, why not spend half that and make sure that our children know how to read and do math by third grade?"
