Tom Perriello on Principles & Values
2008: Opponent lost due to staff gay film scandal
Elected by a margin of only 727 votes in 2008, Perriello ran as a religious conservative. He claimed that "his nonprofit work was a way of answering God's calling." He defeated 6-term incumbent conservative GOP congressman Virgil Goode, after it turned
out that Goode's press secretary had appeared in a low-budget gay-themed film.
Perriello's district leans conservative: McCain carried it with 51% of the vote. Many wonder whether Perriello would have won if it hadn't been for the gay film scandal.
