Tate Reeves on Health Care

Vetoed bill requiring private insurance to be "equitable"

Today, I vetoed two bills that had the potential to seriously increase the cost of health care in Mississippi. The first one would basically give the Insurance Commission the ability to set rates for all health insurance. They can massively fine private insurance if they aren't "equitable" enough. It's not what you expect in Mississippi, but that's why we read every bill closely!

Seek free market solutions to disrupt traditional healthcare

This legislative session, I urge the legislature to think outside the box when it comes to improving Mississippi's healthcare system. Don't simply cave under the pressure of Democrats and their allies in the media who are pushing for the expansion of ObamaCare, welfare, and socialized medicine. Instead, seek innovative free market solutions that disrupt traditional healthcare delivery models, increase competition, and lead to better health outcomes for Mississippians.

Ensure everyone has access to affordable health care

If the pandemic has taught us anything, it is that everyone--every Oregonian--deserves access to affordable health care. I have proposed investments in my budget to expand this access, but, I also expect the Biden-Harris administration to help us financially. Together we must ensure that every single Oregonian has access to this human right. At the same time we need to continue the pioneering work that Oregon has done to reduce the cost of health care.

Invest in health care without succumbing to big government

We need to incentivize quality health care. We must do all of this without falling into the trap that so many misguided politicians cannot avoid. This is not a call for inaction, but a call for caution. We can invest in health care. We should invest in health care. We can protect rural hospitals. We can protect the people of Mississippi. I am eager to work with each of you to do so. We can and we should do all of this without succumbing to the siren song of big government.

Let's find solutions instead of over-institutionalizing

Mississippi is still in the beginning litigation stages of a related U.S. Department of Justice lawsuit. That action alleges that the state over-relies on institutionalization to provide mental-health care--not community-based services. "I think the DOJ has sued us because we haven't done enough community-based care," Reeves told reporters. "We do too much institutionalization, so we've got to work together and find solutions for that."
