Doris Haddock on Social Security

No privatization; stop raiding the trust fund

The argument made by those who would like to privatize Social Security is that it would earn a better return if amateur stock pickers were tossed at the mercy of Wall Street Traders. It is not a compelling argument, and the basis of the whole idea is that the money cannot earn a good return invested by the government. That is only true if the senators spend it all instead of let it mature, which is exactly what they have been doing. Privatization-which will result in the loss of a safety net for many-is not the answer. The answer to the future of Social Security is to stop raiding the trust fund, and balance the federal budget as Mr. Clinton did.
