Socialist Party on Civil Rights

Socialist Party Platform

Oppose making English an official language

We oppose all efforts to declare English an official language and call for an end to all language discrimination. We demand that all public and private institutions provide services and materials in the languages of their communities.

Overcome the intimate link between racism and capitalism

The Socialist Party recognizes the intimate link between racism and capitalism and demands the elimination of all forms of discrimination in housing, jobs, education, health care, etc. We are committed to the creation of a pluralistic society that defends and promotes a multicultural/multiethnic presence in both the public and private spheres. The Socialist Party rejects the social construction of race and we commit ourselves to the eradication of racism.

Full enforcement of the Americans with Disabilities Act

The Socialist Party recognizes the human and civil rights of all, without regard to physical or psychological differences. We deplore media stereotypes that focus on a person's disability rather than on their strengths and abilities, and the physical and social barriers that prevent the full participation by people with disabilities in vital spheres of life.

Ban military tribunals, and restore habeas corpus

Q: What about immigrant detainees? And what about Guantanamo?

A: We call for an end to use of "secret evidence" in deportation hearings, a ban on all immigration detentions and military tribunals, and full due process and habeas corpus right in US courts for all non-citizens.

Promote a multicultural/multiethnic presence

The Socialist Party demands the elimination of all forms of discrimination in housing, jobs, education, health care, etc. We are committed to a pluralistic society that defends and promotes a multicultural/multiethnic presence. We also call for the strict legal penalties for the police practice of racial profiling, and we particularly condemn the targeting of Arabs and Muslims since September 11.

Blacks & women have been historically discriminated against

We oppose all efforts to declare English an official language and we support the enforcement of Native American treaty rights and democratization of power and wealth in tribal governments. We recognize the human and civil rights of all, without regard to physical or psychological disabilities. And we particularly support and defend the rights of blacks, seniors, women and youth who have been historically discriminated against in our society.

Affirmative action is under attack just when redress began

Affirmative action and equal education are under attack by the ruling class and its governments at federal and state levels. Affirmative action, which had barely begun to redress the gross inequalities suffered by oppressed nationalities and women, has been rolled back, gutted and repealed outright in many areas.

We demand that the Black community be compensated fully, with interest, for the historical racism and wrongs forced upon them by capitalist America.

Equal marriage rights for all LGBT

A mass struggle by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people is currently raging over same-sex marriage and the entitlement of same-sex couples to equal rights and benefits. The La Riva/Puryear presidential campaign demands full equality for LGBT people. All forms of discrimination and bigotry must end, including the repeal of all discriminatory laws. The reactionary Defense of Marriage Act must be overturned. We are for equal marriage rights for everyone.

Pay reparations, with interest, for slavery

Since its inception, US society has been marked by extreme racism. At least 12 million Africans were kidnapped and forcibly taken to the Americas as slaves. The capitalist economic system in the US was built largely on the backs of slave labor.

We demand that the Black community be compensated fully, with interest, for the historical racism and wrongs forced upon them by capitalism. The wealth stolen from Black people by corporations, institutions and the government must be repaid in full.

Speak out against racism in any form

The Socialist Party will speak out against racism in any form, as we move toward a new century in which before the year 2050 non-whites will constitute a majority of our people.

Never accept racism, sexism, nor homophobia

It is vitally important to the future of this country and our state that we defeat the Republican agenda, and that we prevent the republicans from recapturing the Congress and taking the White House. That is enormously important. But it is even more important that we as progressives and as Vermonters hold on to that special vision that has propelled us forward for so many years.

A vision which says that we judge people not by their color, their gender, their sexual orientation, their nation of birth-- but by the quality of their character, and that we will never accept sexism, racism, or homophobia.
