  • Episcopal High School, Alexandria VA (1954)
  • US Naval Academy (1958).
  • Graduated fifth from the bottom of his class at Annapolis.
    Professional Experience:
  • After graduating from the US Naval Academy, McCain became a naval aviator and served a 22-year navy career, retiring as a Captain in 1981.
  • In 1967, he was shot down over Hanoi and was a prisoner of war in Vietnam for five and a half years (1967-73).
  • Has received numerous awards, including the Silver Star; Bronze Star; Legion of Merit; Purple Heart; and the Distinguished Flying Cross.
    Political Experience:
  • House of Representatives, 1982-86
  • US Senate, 1986-present.
  • Chairman of the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee.
  • Serves on the Armed Services and Indian Affairs Committees.
  • Chairman of the International Republican Institute (IRI) since 1993.
  • National Security Advisor to the Dole/Kemp presidential campaign.
