Investing surplus in Social Security will provide security

Q: Would you put age, means testing and increased premiums for Social Security and Medicare on the table as you did two years ago? A: No I wouldn’t. I want to take 63% of this surplus and put it into Social Security. If you allow [people] to invest their savings, that will make a huge difference in the solvency of the Social Security trust fund. But you’ve got to take the surplus. Don’t put it all in tax cuts. Give lower income and middle income Americans tax cuts. Don’t give the real rich. tax cuts.

Take Social Security “off budget”

McCain was one of only two Republicans who voted twice, in 1995 and again in 1997, to take Social Security “off-budget” - removing it from balanced budget calculations as part of a constitutional balanced budget amendment - which would have prevented the government from filling the trust fund with “IOU’s”. McCain respects commitments our government makes to its citizens. Americans rely on Social Security, and John McCain will make sure our retirement system is safe and secure.
