John Hagelin on Crime

2000 Natural Law Party Nominee for President

“Get tough” fails; focus on prevention & rehabilitation

Our young people are 12 times more likely to die by gunfire than their peers in other nations. We have the highest percentage of our citizens in jail of any nation in the world. Clearly, our ‘get-tough’ policy, focusing on new prison construction and stiffer sentencing, is not enough. Effective crime prevention is also crucial. I support a comprehensive, field-tested, scientifically proven strategy, including effective prison rehabilitation and reducing societal stress, to prevent and reduce crime.

More prison rehabilitation; address root causes of crime

Replace punishment & jail with rehabilitation & prevention

We have put all of our crime fighting energy in the wrong direction. It’s all about punishing and a knee-jerk reaction to put more and more people in jail. It’s self-destructive. We already have more of our citizens in jail than any country in the world. There is no rehabilitation taking place in our prisons. I will reintroduce effective prison rehabilitation which has been shown to cut the rate of return to prison by up to 90%. This is one of the most effective crime-prevention strategies you could use--target those people who are at highest risk of committing crime, our current prison population.
