Colin Powell on Abortion

Secretary of State (Pres. Bush Cabinet)

Supports a woman’s right to choose

You all know that I believe in a woman’s right to choose and I strongly support affirmative action. And, I was invited here by my party to share my views with you because we are a big enough party -- and big enough people -- to disagree on individual issues and still work together for our common goal: restoring the American Dream.

Pro-choice but not pro-abortion

Powell insists that he is pro-choice, though not pro-abortion. He supports every woman's right to decide whether or not she is to have a child, and he says, "The law of the land says a woman has the right to make that choice." But he recommends alternatives such as adoption to abortion. "A child is a valuable creation," he has said. He does not support government funding of abortions, seeking instead to find ways of making adoption easier.
