In the parties as they currently stand, there have been 14 Democrats and 17 Republicans. But there were 4 "Democrat-Republicans" in the 1800s, whose party was teh predecessor of the modern Democratic Party, So counting those 4, teh Dems lead 18-17. There were also 2 Federalist presidents and 4 Whig presidents.
