State of Kansas Archives: on Jobs

Mark Swaney: Abandon minimum wage in favor of living wage

Swaney said he will fight to make things better for the working class. "The first thing that I have in mind is an increase in the minimum wage," Swaney said. "In the Green Party, we actually support abandoning the entire concept of minimum wage, which is nothing more than a slave's wage. We believe we should be gradually moving towards a living wage and we believe everyone who works a 40 hour week ought to be paid enough in that 40 hour week to take care of themselves and one or two other family members.

Greg Orman: Government should create environment conducive to job growth

It is government's job to create an environment that is conducive to job growth. And we're not doing that.

We've created such uncertainty with our inability to come together and solve problems that it's made it difficult for businesses to choose to invest in the United States. We're our own worst enemy when it comes to creating jobs in this country because the dysfunction in Washington doesn't inspire confidence.

As a country, we need to live within our means. I believe it's immoral to pass along large debts to the next generation. The only way we get spending under control is by making hard choices that Congress today seems unwilling to make. With each party fighting for their own pet projects and political power, there is no accountability to the American people.

Lisa Johnston: Clean energy technology will create jobs

In addition to shoring up the strength of current businesses and institutions, we must also look for innovative, new opportunities to encourage new businesses and industries in beneficial sectors such as clean energy technology. These new initiatives wil not only create new jobs for Kansans and all Americans but also have the potential to create substantial improvements to our economic strength because we will no longer be saddled with the skyrocketing cost of purchasing oil from other countries.

Jim Holt: Restrict China trade until they float their currency

Q: Should the federal government take steps to stop the flow of jobs from the US?

A: Absolutely-when the loss results from rigged trading conditions. By using tariffs on countries who rig the game so that trade between us does not reflect true free-market costs. Currency manipulation would be a major example. Right now the government of China does not float its currency. The medium of exchange between our two economies is not accountable to the free market. Because of this, pure free trade with the managed economy of this communist giant is impossible whether we put tariffs on them or not. The Chi-com industries pay everyone in undervalued money and get overvalued dollars in exchange. One day, it will all collapse of course. Until it does, it represents a conspiracy between the Communist rulers of China and their manufacturing class to pay their workers peanuts (through currency manipulation) and use these artificially lowered costs to takeover American markets.
