State of Rhode Island secondary Archives: on Gun Control

Allan Fung: State funding for armed police at all schools

On school safety, independent Joe Trillo said schools should have trained, armed teachers to deter evil-doers. Fung said he would provide state help for all schools to have armed police officers.

Raimondo said simply that the answer was "fewer guns in schools, period." She didn't say whether she would support schools that want to use state aid to install metal detectors or hire police.

Gina Raimondo: Ban all firearms from public school buildings and grounds

Gov. Gina Raimondo has taken executive action to ban all firearms, except those carried by police officers, from public school buildings and grounds in the state. Raimondo's announcement at the Department of Education offices in Providence was in response to what her office described as uncertainty among education and community leaders and a lack of consistent practices across districts.

The ban on guns in schools comes in the form of a "binding directive" issued to all Rhode Island school superintendents.

Meanwhile, Republican candidate for governor Patricia Morgan said the governor, instead of coming up with sensible solutions, has chosen to "disrespect the Constitution in a deceitful attempt win primary votes. If she were serious about securing our schools and making our children safe she would have acted sooner to upgrade security measures in all our schools."

Patricia Morgan: Upgrade security measures in schools instead of banning guns

Gov. Gina Raimondo has taken executive action to ban all firearms, except those carried by police officers, from public school buildings and grounds in the state.

Meanwhile, Raimondo's opponents lined up to critique the governor's position. Republican candidate for governor Patricia Morgan accused Raimondo and other Democrats in Rhode Island of continuing to wage war on the Constitution. "They won't stop until they erode the 2nd Amendment in Rhode Island," she said. Morgan said the governor, instead of coming up with sensible solutions, has chosen to "disrespect the Constitution in a deceitful attempt win primary votes. If she were serious about securing our schools and making our children safe she would have acted sooner to upgrade security measures in all our schools. There are practical, commonsense solutions that do not involve shredding our Constitutional freedoms, but she laughed at them."

Allan Fung: Against assault rifle ban

Mayor Fung is weathering a series of attacks from rivals over his silence in the wake of a mass shooting in Florida 2 weeks ago. Former state Rep. Trillo began the onslaught saying Fung had come out of "protective custody" when he gave an interview to WPRI-TV that included his first comments on gun violence. He told the TV station that he does not support a ban on assault rifles and that the "red flag" bill introduced in the GA to disarm potentially dangerous people is "too broad."

Bob Flanders: Ban devices that turn guns into massive killing machines

A sampling of his views: The defiant GOP nominee Roy Moore should exit the U.S. Senate race in Alabama in light of the "serious" sexual-abuse charges lobbed against him. Congress should adopt "common-sense limitations" on the constitutional right to bear arms, including a ban on devices that turn guns into "massive killing machines," and it should remove "the incentive" for undocumented immigrants to sneak their children across the border, while making some "accommodation" for the children already here.

Question topic: More restrictive gun control laws are needed now to protect public safety.
