State of Alabama secondary Archives: on Abortion

Tom Coburn: I favor the death penalty for abortionists

"I favor the death penalty for abortionists and other who take life." Tom Coburn to the Associated Press, "Coburn Different Kind of Political Cat," July 9, 2004. Here's another great thing about Coburn. In 1997, he condemned NBC for its prime-time airing of "Schindler's List," saying it took network programming to "an all-time low" by exposing children to, among other things, "vile language, full frontal nudity and irresponsible sexual activity."

Al Sharpton: Abortion is wrong, but let women choose

My religion says that abortion is wrong. And while I may believe that life begins when the sperm meets the egg, and that only God should decide whether to take a life, I will not stand in the way of a woman’s right to choose. If women do not have a right to choose, then it’s a civil rights violation.

Al Sharpton: His Supreme Court nominees will allow right to choose

I would only appoint justices to the Supreme Court who are for women having the right to choose whether or not they will have an abortion. Now, I can believe something without having to impose my beliefs on others. That’s true separation of church and state.

Al Gore: Two questions: Is abortion acceptable? Who should decide?

In 1992 on the David Frost Show, Gore said he still regarded abortion as the taking of “innocent human life” but conceded that he no longer used such phrases in letters because they are “so loaded with political charge.” He added, “I think many of us have mixed feelings, because there are two questions involved. The first question is how you feel about an abortion in a given set of circumstances. And the second question is, who makes the decision? And regardless of how you and I might feel about the rightness or wrongness of a given decision in a particular set of circumstances, I believe the government ought not to have the right to order a woman to accept its judgment about how to weigh the different aspects of the decision, and order the woman to make the decision that government says she has to make, instead of leaving the decision to her. I’ve always believed that.
