Bruce Rauner in 2018 IL Governor's race

On Civil Rights: Accepts gay marriage as settled

Rauner has taken a few LGBT-supportive actions, such as signing into law a ban on the use of "ex-gay" therapy on minors by state-licensed professionals. During his 2014 race for governor against incumbent Democrat Pat Quinn, Rauner said he would have vetoed the marriage equality bill that Quinn signed into law, but Rauner also said he would not try to undo marriage equality in the state--now a moot point because of the 2015 Supreme Court decision.

On Energy & Oil: Green energy part of future mix

Governor Bruce Rauner signed the Future Energy Jobs bill. It contains a guaranteed cap that energy prices cannot increase more than 25 cents on the average residential home, and cannot increase more than 1.3 percent on commercial and industrial users over the next ten years. It also promotes unprecedented wind and solar expansion and preserves zero-emission generation, maintaining Illinois' status in leading the nation in zero-carbon generation.

On Gun Control: Crack down on out of state gun traffickers

Firearm traffickers in Illinois will be punished with sentences of up to 30 years in prison under legislation Gov. Bruce Rauner signed, a move aimed at curbing Chicago's rampant gun violence. The new law seeks to address criminals skirting Illinois' strict gun policies by purchasing firearms in other states where little screening is required. Investigators say more than half of the firearms recovered in Illinois crime scenes are traced back to other states.

On Immigration: State won't help or impede immigration enforcement

The version Rauner signed is only four pages long, and all of the language on arrests at public or publicly funded facilities has been deleted. It contains two directives for state and local police: Officers cannot detain people without a warrant from a judge and they can't 'stop, arrest, search, detain, or continue to detain a person solely based on an individual's citizenship or immigration status.

On Abortion: Pro-choice Republican torn if Roe overturned

He announced he'll veto abortion legislation HB40. The measure keeps abortion legal in Illinois if Roe v. Wade is overturned, calling for expanding abortion coverage under Medicaid and in state worker health plans. Illinois has "trigger" language on the books that threatens to automatically make abortion illegal if the high court overturns Roe. So if the governor vetoes the measure, it opens him to criticism that he isn't a committed supporter of abortion rights.
