On Abortion: Courts added tax-paid abortions to RomneyCare; not me

ROMNEY: First, in RomneyCare, there's no mention of abortion whatsoever. The Massachusetts Supreme Court decided that all times that there was any subsidy of health care in Massachusetts that one received abortion care. That was not done by the legislature; I would have vetoed such a thing. That was done by the courts. #2, it's true, somewhere in that bill of ours, 70 pages, there's the mention of the words "Planned Parenthood," but it describes payment structures.

SANTORUM: You do not specifically mention that abortion is not covered. You can't say: Oh, gee, surprise, the court made us cover abortions. He knew very well that the court would make him cover abortions.

On Abortion: I had no litmus test for appointing judges, but I'm pro-life

ROMNEY: I appointed probably 50 or 60 judges--at the trial court level, mostly, the great majority. These were former prosecutors; 80% of them former prosecutors. We don't have a litmus test for appointing judges--asking them if they're pro-life or not pro-life. These were people going after crimes and the like. I am pro-life. And the Massachusetts Citizens for Life and several other family-oriented groups wrote a letter two weeks ago and said they'd watched my record, that I was an avidly pro-life governor. I am a pro-life governor; I am a pro-life individual. Is there any possibility that I've ever made a mistake in that regard, I didn't see something that I should have seen? Possibly. But you can count on me, as president, to pursue a policy that protects the life of unborn, whether here in this country or overseas. And I'll reverse the policies of this president.

On Corporations: Capitalism works; free enterprise works; & profit works

ROMNEY: I know we're going to get attacked from the left, from Barack Obama, on capitalism. My view is, capitalism works. Free enterprise works. And I find it kind of strange, on a stage like this, with Republicans, having to describe how private equity and venture capital create jobs. I think Adam Smith was right, and I'm going to stand and defend capitalism across this country,

Q: You claimed Bain Capital created 120,000 jobs. Could you do the math?

ROMNEY: We started a number of businesses; four in particular created 120,000 jobs. There are others lost jobs: about 10,000. So 120,000 less 10,000 means that we created something over 100,000 jobs. Some businesses we acquired grew, like Domino's Pizza and Duane Reade and others.

On Jobs: End crony capitalism to get Americans back to work

ROMNEY: Let's go back and talk about, first, what you do to get the economy going. We've spoken about our tax code that's out of alignment with other nations. We've spoken about the fact that regulation is overwhelming us, that we need to become energy-secure. We have to open up markets, and we have to crack down on China when they cheat. But I'd like to talk about something else that President Obama has been doing. He's been practicing crony capitalism. And if you want to get America going again, you've got to stop the spread of crony capitalism. He gives General Motors to the UAW. He takes $500 million and sticks it into Solyndra. He stacks the labor stooges on the NLRB, so they can say no to Boeing and take care of their friends in the labor movement. This president is biggest impediment to job growth in this country, and we have to replace Barack Obama to get America working again.

On Technology: SOPA, as written, restricts the Internet & free speech

GINGRICH: Virtually everybody who's technologically advanced say this is going to totally mess up the Internet, and the bill in its current form is written really badly and leads to a range of censorship that is totally unacceptable.

ROMNEY: I think he got it just about right. The law as written is far too intrusive, far too expansive, far too threatening to freedom of speech and movement of information across the Internet. It would have a potentially depressing impact on one of the fastest-growing industries in America, which is the Internet and all those industries connected to it. At the same time, we care very deeply about intellectual content that's going across the Internet. And if we can find a way to very narrowly, through our current laws, go after those people who are pirating, particularly those from offshore, we'll do that--but a very broad law--I think that's a mistake.
