KAINE: Donald Trump wrote a book and said Social Security is a Ponzi scheme and privatization would be good for all of us.PENCE: Well, there they go again.
KAINE: Go read the book And when Congressman Pence was in Congress, he was the chief cheerleader for the privatization of Social Security. Even after President Bush stopped pushing for it, Congressman Pence kept pushing for it.
We're going to stand up against efforts to privatize Social Security. And we'll look for ways to keep it solvent going forward, focusing primarily on the payroll tax cap.
PENCE: All Donald Trump and I have said about Social Security is we're going to meet our obligations to our seniors. That's it.

We will keep promises to seniors
All Donald Trump and I have said about Social Security is we're going to meet our obligations to our seniors. That's it. We've said we're going to meet the obligations of Medicare. That's what this campaign is really about.
And I get [it, that] this is the old scare tactic that they roll out. We're going to reform government programs so we can meet the obligations of Social Security and Medicare.

Personal investment for Social Security retirement
"Conservatives want to see personal retirement accounts that have immediate relevance to younger Americans, that they can see the value, and that will require that they be big and that they be implemented in the final bill without delay," said Rep. Mike
Pence. Pence said Republicans have come to agreement on principles for fiscal discipline and Social Security, and are prepared to be the conservative balance trying to give the president the backing to pursue the boldest possible plans on both issues.

Cutting Social Security should be on the table
Pence spent 12 years in Congress as a leading fiscal conservative. During his tenure he backed efforts to reform Social Security. In 2010, when asked whether he'd support making cuts to Social Security, Pence told CNN, "I think everything has to be on
the table." When asked if he'd raise the retirement age, he said, "I'm an all-of-the-above guy. We need look at everything on the menu." At the time, he said any reforms should just affect Americans under the age of 40.

Social Security is a covenant but needs commonsense reforms
Congressman Mike Pence says, "We must keep our promise to America's seniors and ensure the solvency of Medicare and Social Security for retirees in the future." Social Security and Medicare must be saved and strengthened for future retirees.
Congress must work in a bipartisan fashion to enact commonsense reforms so that we ensure that these programs are available and strengthened for future generations.Social Security is a covenant between the American government and American retirees.
Our nation's senior citizens have paid into the Social Security system their whole life with the promise that it would be there for them when they retire. I intend to keep this promise, not only to those Americans who currently rely on
Social Security, but also to those Americans who are nearing retirement and will be relying on this program to meet their retirement budgets.

Down-the-road raising of the Social Security retirement age
Top Republican leaders in the House offered a fairly strong signal on Sunday that they would favor a down-the-road raising of the Social Security retirement age as part of an effort to revamp the entitlement program. Later during the "Meet the Press"
program, Mike Pence was asked if he supported the idea. The Indiana Republican stammered around for a bit, echoing the same talking point concerning the need for "an adult conversation about domestic spending and entitlements."
